Two small pools, possibly caused by
springs, and surrounded by reed beds, lie 1km south east of Maybole along the B7023 to Crosshill
at NS 311 094 on the north side of the road. Park in a small layby near the wetland and scan
the area from the roadside. Please be aware of passing traffic. Trains and buses to Maybole are
regular and national and local waymarked cycle routes pass close by.
This is a busy country road with no safe refuges for
wheelchair users to avoid passing traffic. Lay-by has rough surface, hedges obscure view of
loch.
Local byway network and National Cycle Route
7 pass close by.
The pools are attractive to wetland breeders and passage migrants. Water Rail, Grasshopper Warbler, Sedge Warbler , Reed Bunting and Kingfisher are regulars and Green Sandpiper and Marsh Harrier have been recorded here (see the article Breeding Marsh Harrier in Ayrshire by Angus Hogg).
