Ayrshire Birders Abroad
In addition to the groups' day trips, extended trips to locations further afield are also arranged by Tony and Gerda Scott. The programme follows on from past successes with trips to Holland, Germany, Norfolk and Sri Lanka. For further details or to make a booking please contact Tony or Greda. (From personal experience I can hugely recommend these tours - the organisation is immaculate and you don't starve or die of thirst! Oh, and the birding is good too! - Ed.)
Spring birding in Austria & Hungary 8th–16th May 2010
Springtime holds so many delights for birders in this amazingly bird-rich corner of Austria’s Burgenland. Things should be literally jumping with life at this time of the year. We will be spending many hours visiting the lakes within the Seewinkel area and looking for great bustards on the steppes of the Ferto Hansag Nemetzi park over the border in Hungary. We can marvel at the many white storks nesting in two totally different habits. Those nesting traditionally on the roofs of houses in villages around the lake and particularly in the pretty wine village of Rust. There are also those tree-nesting storks in the huge colony at the WWF reserve of Marchegg on the border with Slovakia. We will also have great views of raptors. On our last visit we saw common and honey buzzards, marsh harriers, white-tailed eagles and Eastern Imperial eagles to name but a few. Warblers, shrikes, woodpeckers, bee-eaters, nutcrackers and a cast of thousands should brighten up our birding days! We will be flying to Vienna and all of our ground travel in Austria will be provided by Blaguss Reisen who have a fleet of modern, comfortable coaches and who looked after us so well in 2007.

The Crane Migration on the Baltic island of Rügen and the Müritz National Park 1st–11th October 2010
Leader: Angus Hogg. Organised by Tony & Gerda Scott
We will be flying directly from Glasgow to Berlin for a ten day tour of the the islands and national parks of eastern Germany's Baltic coast. We will be staying for seven nights on the island of Rügen in the Landhotel Ulmenhof, a superior three-star hotel; we then spend the last three nights at Komfort-Hotel Ingeborg in the town of Waren on the shores of Lake Müritz in the National Park of the same name. Our focus will be on the crane migration which reaches a peak in early to mid October. Last year on the Baltic coast area – a total of over 60,000 birds arrived in one day. The birds usually stay around for a week or so before heading south to Spain. We hope to see lots of other intersting species of course, white-tailed eagles and five woodpecker species in the Müritz area and rough-legged buzzards, goshawks and other raptors, seabirds and waders feature highly on the islands. The cost of €1540 (currently £1386) includes flights; all coach travel in Germany; boat trips to the islands of Hiddensee and Vilm. Boat trip along the coast from Sassnitz to view the Jasmund National Park from the sea; an evening cruise to get close to the common crane roosts within the Bodden National Park and a cruise on the Müritz Lake. It includes all accommodation in en-suite rooms, ten buffet breakfast and ten dinners. It also includes entrance to all national park centres, hides and crane viewing platforms; a trip on the narrow-gauge steam railway 'Rasender Roland' from Putbus to Goehren; the services of our bird leader Angus Hogg and of a local ornithologist from the National Parks on some days. Quite a package! Please have a look at the full itinerary for more details and a booking form (note: these are PDF documents).
