Ayrshire Bird Report

Bird Report 2007 cover

The Ayrshire Bird Report has been published annually since 1976. It contains a chronological summary of the previous year, various articles, as well as a detailed systematic list of sightings and breeding records of birds in the county. Also included is the Ayrshire Butterfly Report. The full report can be obtained from the following outlets (still) priced £4:

Adobe Acrobat

Past editions of entire recent Ayrshire Bird Reports are available in Adobe PDF format to download. Note, however, that these are large documents and will take a while to download, e.g. over ten minutes on a fast modem. They also don't include the colour front covers. Click on the link to open the Report using Adobe Acrobat Reader, or right-click on the link and use your browser's facility to save the file to your machine (it's Save Target As under Internet Explorer). (Acrobat Reader is available from Adobe's web site).

Gazetteer of Birding Place Names

The Ayrshire Bird Report names the places where sightings took place. Often these are the hot-spots listed in the Where to Watch Birds in Ayrshire section. However, for many records the place might not be so well known. Angus Hogg and I have prepared a gazetteer that lists the 160+ places mentioned in the 1999 Bird Report (a typical year, I hope) together with the OS grid reference to identify the location.

Ayrshire Birds Records Committee

Members
Brian Orr (Secretary), Angus Hogg (Chairman), Gordon MacDonald and Jason McManus.

Click here for a full list of the species that the Committee considers (the ones marked with §). Not all records will require a full written description but, in some cases, detailed field notes may be required. For some species (marked with ‡), the records will be forwarded to the Scottish Birds Record Committee (SBRC).

Contributions

In order for us to produce the report we obviously need records of all sightings made in Ayrshire during the year. These can be submitted to the County Recorder at any time of the year, but before the end of the following February to be included in that year's report. Articles and short notes for publication should be sent to the Editor before the end of the current year. Black-and-white photographs or line drawings would also be very welcome.
